Health care benefits

So many great reasons to make private health insurance plans

Your health in your hands

You'll notice a range of valuable health care benefits when you take out private cover with us. Hospital cover with HBA puts the decisions that matter in your hands. Like being able to choose your own doctor or specialist, which means you can benefit from having the one dedicated professional treating you and looking after you.

You can also choose where you are treated, and potentially, when you are treated, with HBA hospital cover working to help you to avoid waiting lists.

Cover where Medicare doesn't

Include Extras cover in your health insurance plans and HBA will help you with the cost of services not covered by Medicare, taking the pain out of paying for services like dental, physiotherapy, optical and natural therapies such as massage and acupuncture.

Save for a lifetime

If you're over 31 and don't have private hospital cover, the sooner you get it, the smaller the loading you'll have to pay on your premium under the Government's Lifetime Health Cover scheme. If you're 31 or under, take out hospital cover now and you may avoid the loading altogether.

Check out our Lifetime Health Cover calculator to find out if you are affected and by how much

At least 30% off your premiums

Here's just another private health care benefit. You can save at least 30% on your hospital and extras premiums with the Government rebate on health insurance. If you're aged between 65 to 69, the rebate increases to 35%. And if you're aged 70 or over, it is 40%. So whatever your health insurance plans, you now have access to more affordable premiums.

The rebate is available to everyone who is eligible for Medicare.

Save on Tax

If you're single and your taxable income is over $70,000 a year, or a couple with a combined taxable income of $140,000 a year, or a family with a combined taxable income of $141,500 a year* and you don't have private hospital cover, you may have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge. This is a 1% tax on top of the 1.5% Medicare Levy paid by most taxpayers.

Why not avoid paying extra tax and get the health care benefits of private cover?

Save on health costs

It's a fact that you might not use your HBA private health cover every month, but you will have to keep paying for it because that's the way insurance works.

This might lead you to wonder if it would be cheaper to put some money away each week and set up your own DIY private hospital fund.

We've done a few calculations to help you weigh up your options, and make the health insurance plans that are right for you. However, please note that the amounts outlined in the charts below include private hospital accommodation and medical treatment only. Rehabilitation would be extra.

A minor medical procedure

If you set aside this amount each week It will take this long to save $6,000
$5 23 years, 5 days
$10 11 years, 185 days

A major health problem
